This activity consists of recorded presentations from the "29th Annual National Conference" held virtually Dec. 2–3, 2020.

The increasing need for liver transplants has created a wide gap between organ supply and demand, resulting in long waiting times to receive an organ and an increasing number of deaths while waiting. These events have raised many ethical, moral, and societal issues regarding supply and organ allocation. This session will discuss the ethical challenges associated with liver-transplant allocation and the risks and benefits of liver transplant for recipients with fragility, alcoholic hepatitis, and advanced cancer.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals who are interested in liver transplantation.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the ethical challenges generated by the current gap between supply and demand for liver transplant and the methods of organ allocation.
  • Examine the risks and benefits of liver transplant for recipients with fragility, alcoholic hepatitis, and advanced cancer.
