Addressing the Unpredictable Diagnostic Odyssey of Rare Disease
Activity description
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "31st Annual National Clinical Conference" held in Bloomington, Minn., Oct. 17-19, 2022.
Rare diseases — often complex, chronic life-threatening conditions affecting roughly 33 million people in the U.S. — impact quality of life, carry a high financial burden, and have few, if any, treatment choices. Adults and children with undiagnosed genetic diseases often face an unpredictable, long journey, referred to as a diagnostic odyssey, that lasts eight years on average and includes unnecessary tests and procedures, misdiagnoses, and delayed treatment while their conditions worsen. This presentation addresses the needs for improved access to care, new advances in rare-disease diagnosis, and treatments emerging with the rise of personalized precision medicine. New possibilities for collaboration among medicine, research and drug-development organizations are also discussed.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers, dietitians, and other health care professionals who are interested in rare diseases.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Provide an overview of the conditions that qualify as rare diseases and their impact on quality of life, health care costs, and outcomes as related to diagnosis and treatment availability.
- Discuss the current and emerging contributions that precision medicine and specific testing approaches can provide in diagnosing and treating rare diseases.
- Describe how rare-disease outcomes can be improved through strategies such as collaborative approaches that coordinate health care, research, and drug-development organizations.

About the presenter
Matthew Might, MD, has been the director of the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) since 2017. At UAB, Dr. Might is the Hugh Kaul endowed chair of personalized medicine, a professor of internal medicine and a professor of computer science. From 2016 to 2018, Dr. Might was a strategist in the Executive Office of the President in The White House. In 2015, Dr. Might joined the faculty of the department of biomedical informatics at the Harvard Medical School, first as visiting professor and since 2017 as senior lecturer. Dr. Might was co-founder and chief scientific officer of NGLY1.org, and he was a co-founder and scientific advisor to Pairnomix. Q State Biosciences acquired Pairnomix in October 2018. Dr. Might remains a scientific advisor and board member.
