Autism Spectrum Disorder Part V: Dual Diagnosis of Down Syndrome and ASD

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a wide range of strengths and weaknesses. ASD is a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by impaired social interactions, difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, rigid routines and repetitive behaviors and limited activities and interests. Individuals with sown syndrome (DS) can also be diagnosed as having ASD.

This activity has been developed to provide an overview of ASD and DS with the goal of developing an understanding of the disorders and promoting optimal outcomes and compassionate care for these individuals and their families. This activity will discuss both the medical and behavioral concerns in individuals with DS and ASD. It will also highlight the importance of a coordinated health care team and educational programs designed for these individuals. The journey of a family experiencing these diagnoses will also be featured.

Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss medical concerns in individuals with DS-ASD.
  • Describe what ASD looks like in a child with DS (behavioral phenotype).
  • Examine behavioral treatment options for sleep problems and other issues.
  • Realize the importance of coordinating care for individuals with DS-ASD.
  • Explore the design of educational programs for individuals with DS-ASD.
  • Address the journey of a family with both DS and ASD diagnoses.
