A Closer Look at Novel Treatment Therapies for Acute Myeloid Leukemia
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "Essentials of Oncology, Solid Organ and Blood/Marrow Transplant Management for the Health Care Team" conference held in Scottsdale, Ariz., March 14–15, 2022.
Treatment options for the complex and aggressive disease of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have been limited for over 40 years, until the recent approval of nine novel agents in the past three years. These new therapies — drugs that selectively target molecules and cellular pathways — vary in their mechanisms of action, toxicity profiles, and indications for use in the clinical setting based upon the individual’s AML profile. This session will discuss these novel agents’ indications, risks, and benefits and will address which patient populations are most likely to benefit from particular agents. In addition, early-phase clinical trials and emerging therapies will be explored.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers, dietitians, and other health care professionals who are interested in acute myeloid leukemia and treatment options.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the novel AML treatment therapies that have recently become available and review their role in targeting the molecules and pathways involved in AML progression.
- Examine indications for the inclusion of novel agents in initial therapy for AML versus in the relapse and salvage setting.
- Address which patient populations are likely to benefit from the recently approved and novel investigational agents and combination therapies.

About the presenter
At City of Hope since 2008, Dr. Joseph Alvarnas serves as vice president for government affairs and chief clinical advisor, AccessHopeTM. Previously, he served as director of value-based analytics and director of clinical quality for the City of Hope Alpha Stem Cell Clinic. He earned his medical degree at the University of California San Francisco and did fellowships in hematology and bone marrow transplantation at Stanford University Medical Center. An articulate spokesperson on topics ranging from hematology to health policy, Dr. Alvarnas is also editor-in-chief of the publication Evidence-based Oncology and is chair of the American Society of Hematology Committee on Practice.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program.
