Changes in the Incidence of Cancer
Activity description
This activity consists of recorded presentations from the "29th Annual National Conference" held virtually Dec. 2–3, 2020.
The incidence of cancer cases serves as an indicator of progress made in cancer prevention and diagnosis; the emergence of risk factors for certain types of cancer; and the need for more research on preventing, diagnosing, and treating different cancer types. The changing incidence for some types of cancers may reflect changes in the approach to diagnosis or indicate that risk factors for these cancers are either becoming scarcer or more prevalent.
The 2020 Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer is the first Annual Report to include data and trends for children and younger adults. Among children, overall cancer incidence rates have been increasing between 2012 and 2016. Examining the incidence of cancer in children, adolescents, and younger adults may help focus efforts on reducing the cancer burden in this population.
This session will explore trends in the incidence of cancer and review contributing factors that may lead to increasing the incidence rates of certain cancers among children, adolescents and adults. The ongoing negative impact of COVID-19 on cancer and future cancer care will also be discussed.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals who are interested in oncology.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the importance of examining cancer incidence trends.
- Identify cancer types that have changed in incidence over time and review contributing factors.
- Recognize the ongoing negative impact of COVID-19 on cancer screening, diagnoses, and treatment; articulate implications for future cancer care.
