Geriatric syndromes are multifactorial conditions that are common in older adults. These syndromes can be present in residents of nursing homes that provide long-term care. However, geriatric syndromes are often not well understood, though the term is commonly used in daily practice in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. An awareness of these common syndromes can help staff better understand the care needs of residents and improve quality of care and outcomes. This activity will identify the basic elements of several of the most common syndromes, offer insight into how geriatric syndromes can impact a resident’s daily life and provide a better appreciation of how an individual’s organ systems are interconnected to help mitigate risk and enable development of a better care plan for optimal outcomes.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, social workers and other health care professionals (HCPs) who have an interest in learning about geriatric syndromes.
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Clearly define the term “geriatric syndrome”.
- Identify the basic elements of several of the most common syndromes.
- Facilitate development of a better care plan for these syndromes by, for instance, understanding how multiple organ systems can impact the risk for falls.
- Educate families about what a geriatric syndrome is and how it may be impacting a resident’s daily life.
- Explain the potential effects of polypharmacy and how medications can have cumulative side effects and interactions.

The participant will be awarded up to .50 contact hour(s) of credit for attendance and completion of supplemental materials.
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive .50 continuing education credits.
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
