Skilled Nursing Facilities Series: Sepsis Prevention/Management and Antibiotic Stewardship
Activity description
This activity focuses on the early recognition, prevention and management of sepsis and septic shock in long-term care settings, guided by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign: International Guidelines for Management of Sepsis 2021. Participants will learn to identify sepsis using evidence-based screening tools, recognize the relationship between systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), infection, sepsis and septic shock and implement immediate interventions to prevent disease progression, with an emphasis on practical strategies for diagnostic workup, antibiotic selection, communication with families and primary care providers and contingency planning to ensure timely, appropriate care. Post-sepsis monitoring and education on long-term effects will also be addressed to optimize patient outcomes.
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, nurses, PAs, case managers, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other HCPs who care for older adults.
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Define sepsis and differentiate it from SIRS, infection and septic shock using current guidelines and screening tools.
- Discuss immediate interventions and diagnostic strategies for suspected sepsis in long-term care, including appropriate labs, imaging and antibiotic choices.
- Describe a comprehensive plan of care that aligns with patient goals, ensures right care at the right time and includes contingency planning and family education.
- Identify principles of post-sepsis monitoring and advanced care planning to address long-term effects and prevent future complications.
