Assessment of Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Introduction to Exposure and Response Prevention

July 11, 2025

Activity description

PLEASE NOTE: These materials are intended ONLY for those who attended the live webcast held on July 11, 2025.

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), focusing on its assessment and treatment using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). It explores the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms that contribute to the development and persistence of OCD and outlines strategies for identifying obsession and compulsion themes. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding clients’ core fears in applying effective interventions. The training also guides clinicians in preparing clients for ERP, constructing fear hierarchies, and conducting effective exposure sessions. It highlights the therapist’s role in treatment and addresses common challenges encountered during the therapeutic process.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other BHCPs who care for individuals within the Medicaid population.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the cognitive-behavioral model underlying the development and maintenance of OCD and related disorders.
  • Explain the process of assessing for OCD, including how to identify themes in obsessions and compulsions.
  • Identify three components of a strong fear hierarchy.
  • Describe five key elements of ERP interventions.
  • Discuss strategies to collaborate effectively with interprofessional teams to promote overall mental wellness, including engaging in regular team meetings, sharing insights from different disciplines, and developing integrated care plans that address the holistic needs of patients.
