The Intersection of Bias, Belonging and Burnout

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Decades of research confirms that we all carry various implicit biases that shape our perceptions of others and of ourselves. Implicit bias erodes workplace culture, affects individuals’ sense of belonging and connection, stymies professional advancement and has a profound impact on mental health. Yet, the awareness of individual bias has had the effect of taking the onus off of institutions to make the kind of systems-level change necessary to cultivate inclusive workplaces. In this activity, we examine implicit and structural biases at the individual and institutional levels, with a specific focus on gender-based bias in health care. Our aim is to identify the strengths and limitations of the implicit bias trend (including implicit association testing and training) and provide equity-driven strategies to achieve authentic and sustainable change.
