NRS Journal Club - Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

January 27, 2023

Activity description

These materials are only intended for those that attended the NRS Journal Club, held on January 27, 2023.

Best practices in neonatal care aim to ensure the survival and healthy development of the infant, and improved awareness of these practices can positively impact multiple aspects of care, including diagnostic and management strategies, evaluative assessments of high-risk newborns and treatment approaches for neonates requiring NICU care. This series of journal club activities will provide a venue for neonatal health care practitioners to stay current with best practices identified within recent medical literature and to identify, describe and disseminate effective clinical strategies that can improve the standards of neonatal care provided by the health care team.

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), which causes respiratory illness in 30% to 50% of preterm newborns, is associated with significant morbidity, mortality and an increased risk for poor medical and developmental outcomes throughout childhood. This journal club activity will examine current research on the treatment-based classification of BPD severity and its ability to accurately predict respiratory morbidity and death. It will also discuss an updated, online BPD outcome estimator tool that evaluates the risk of developing BPD and/or death within the first month after birth.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the limitations of current diagnostic criteria for BPD in preterm infants.
  • Identify how to estimate the probability of BPD or death in preterm infants with reasonable accuracy using an updated BPD outcome estimator tool.
  • Describe risk factors for BPD and how underlying risks can influence treatment effectiveness.
  • Discuss BPD diagnostic criteria that best predict the likelihood of respiratory morbidity or death.
