According to self-reported statistics, 19.7 million Americans have a substance use disorder (SUD). The most abused substances are alcohol, pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria are used to diagnose the psychological condition of SUD, but the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes used to identify SUD are the same as the descriptors for physical dependence. This can cause confusion when documenting SUD.
