Activity description
Cognitive function is a major determinant of an individual’s quality of life. However, the number of individuals developing a neurocognitive disorder (NCD) is increasing as the population ages. NCD is a general term that describes decreased mental function due to a medical disease other than a psychiatric illness. This activity will discuss the significance of and various screening methods for NCDs, as well as identifying resources to assist in the plan of care for individuals and their future needs as an NCD progresses.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians and other health care professionals interested in the care of individuals with NCDs.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the significance of NCDs in the Medicare population.
- Discuss various screening methods for dementia and mild cognitive impairment.
- Describe the clinical approach to diagnosing and differentiating types of dementia.
- Identify dementia with and without behavioral disturbances and discuss the most common management strategies.
