Activity description
These materials are only intended for those that attended the live activity, Hyperbilirubinemia, held October 26, 2022.
While jaundice is the most common problem encountered among newborns, 1% to 2% develop severe hyperbilirubinemia, with levels reaching over 20 mg/dL. This activity will discuss the signs, symptoms and risk factor stratification for hyperbilirubinemia, including the potentially toxic effects of hyperbilirubinemia on the central nervous system, including encephalopathy. It will incorporate case-based discussions of clinical presentations to highlight common causes, elucidate optimal therapies and guide the learner through the clinical evaluation process. In addition, isoimmune hemolytic (Rh) disease and ABO blood type incompatibility will be examined, along with a review of diagnostic approaches.

- Describe hyperbilirubinemia and neurotoxicity risk factors in newborns.
- Identify the pathophysiology of isoimmune hemolytic disease.
- Discuss the different treatments for hyperbilirubinemia in newborns and when these treatments are indicated.
