This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses and other health care professionals (HCPs) who are interested in learning about medication adherence and barriers.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the importance of daily adherence to medications for patients with chronic conditions.
- Realize the barriers and solutions to improve medication adherence.
- Recognize the simple tools and techniques to help patients stay adherent to their medications.
- Identify non-complaint patients using data and lab results.
- Appreciate the importance of collaborative efforts and a holistic approach to improve medication adherence.
Sonal Shah, PharmD

Dr. Sonal Shah received her Doctorate in pharmacy (PharmD) from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1999. She has extensive experience working as a pharmacist in a variety of pharmacy settings including hospital and retail and as a clinical consultant pharmacist. She worked in New Jersey at CVS/Caremark for over 10 years, where she had multiple roles across the organization, including pharmacy manager, preceptor and trainer/coordinator. She worked as a clinical consultant pharmacist at Mercer County Children’s Medical Daycare for 3 years. She returned to the South since she enjoys the southern charm and hospitality and joined UnitedHealthcare in 2017 as a clinical pharmacist with Community Plan of Texas/Oklahoma. She has been a preceptor for over 10 years and her passion and enthusiasm to educate and improve patient care drove her to create an APPE Pharmacy Internship Program in collaboration with Texas Southern University. She serves as the program coordinator.

Disclosures of relevant financial relationships
In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education's (ACCME) Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, OptumHealth Education (OHE) requires all those in control of educational content to disclose their financial relationships with ineligible companies within the prior 24 months. Ineligible companies are defined by the ACCME as companies whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing health care products used by or on patients. OptumHealth Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team.
Credit designation statement
The participant will be awarded up to 1.00 contact hour(s) of credit for attendance and completion of supplemental materials.
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
