This educational activity will provide an in-depth review of the latest evidence-based therapies for the management of heart failure (HF). Participants will gain insights into the prevalence of and risk factors for HF, review the updated classifications and stages of this disease and explore the benefits of current medical therapies. The session will address common barriers to therapy optimization and strategies for overcoming them, with the aim of improving patient outcomes through the effective implementation of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT).

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in heart failure.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence of and risk factors for HF and its impact on public health. 
  • Identify the different stages of HF and its classifications based on ejection fraction (EF). 
  • Explain the four main classes of GDMT for HF with reduced EF (HFrEF), including the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. 
  • Discuss the reasons for therapy underutilization in HF and strategies to overcome these barriers. 
  • Implement evidence-based strategies for the early and rapid initiation of GDMT to reduce HF hospitalizations and cardiovascular mortality.
