Across the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Spectrum: A Call to Action

LGBTQ+ people can feel marginalized and often stigmatized in health care settings. These individuals have an increased risk of certain physical and mental health conditions compared to the general population and they often receive sub-optimal care, have lower rates of preventive screening and avoid seeking medical care for fear of discrimination. This often adversely impacts clinical outcomes.
This activity will provide health care providers with increased awareness surrounding these issues so that communication with LGBTQ+ people is respectful and sensitive. It will review how patient-provider interactions can be more supportive of the individual’s needs, how to take a full history and perform an inclusive and affirming physical exam, and how health information can be thoughtfully documented to provide accurate information regarding health issues, screening recommendations and risk prevention.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, office staff, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists, and other HCPs and staff who are interested in creating environments in which LGBTQ+ individuals can feel validated, safe, and welcome.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe how disparities in health care impact the physical and mental health of LGBTQ+ people, increase risk of illness, and affect health outcomes.
- Recognize appropriate and respectful ways to communicate with LGBTQ+ people when entering discussions regarding sexual orientation, gender identity and health issues.
- Conduct an inclusive clinical assessment and document sensitive health information to enable accurate risk assessment, comprehensive screening and preventative care.

Michelle Garrido, MD, MS

Dr. Michelle Garrido is a Los Angeles native who was born to Cuban immigrants. She attended UCLA, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in science, and she received her Master’s degree from California State University, Northridge. She went on to teach high school science for several years. She eventually returned to school for a post-bac program at the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed medical school there. She spent most of her years in Chicago on her beloved fixed-gear bicycle through rain, wind or snow.
Dr. Garrido completed her family medicine training at Harbor-UCLA in Torrance. She is a primary care physician at Optum's Van Nuys clinic. Her biggest clinical interest is in LGBTQ+ health and equitable access to health care. She identifies as a lesbian and uses she/her pronouns. She and her wife have quite the funny and adored five-year-old son, along with two lovely elderly cats. The family resides in the San Fernando Valley.
Margaret-Mary G. Wilson, MD, MBA, MRCP

Dr. Margaret-Mary Wilson is executive vice president and chief medical officer, UnitedHealth Group. Prior to joining UnitedHealthcare in 2008, she was an associate professor of Internal and Geriatric Medicine at St. Louis University, Missouri, where she also served as director of Geriatric Ambulatory Services and director of the Ortho-Geriatric Service. Her experience also includes direct patient care, medical education, patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, and global healthcare systems management in a variety of health care settings in Africa, the United Kingdom, South America and the United States.
She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Healthcare Quality Management, and completed a Clinical Cardiology fellowship at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in Hammersmith Hospital, UK. Dr. Wilson is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and a fellow of the American Institute of Healthcare Quality, the American Board of Quality Assurance & Utilization Review Physicians, and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. She holds a master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Healthcare Management.
Dr. Wilson has received numerous awards in medicine, including UnitedHealth Group’s inaugural Sages Interdisciplinary Collaboration Award, the Kathy Humphrey Award for Excellence in the promotion of cultural diversity in medical education, the St. Louis University William Osler Teaching Award for excellence in clinical teaching, the Gladney Diversity Award for outstanding performance as a medical educator and the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Chevening Award. She received a 2019 Business of Pride award from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal and was named a 2018 “Woman Worth Watching” by Diversity Journal. In 2021, Dr. Wilson was named one of the Top 100 most influential African Americans in Business by the National Diversity Council and one of the Top 100 elite women in 2021 by Diversity Journal. She has published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks.

State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals, such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure.
