Advance Your Skills in Supporting the Family Caregiver
Being a caregiver is a stressful and demanding job. Maintaining a caregiver’s well-being is essential to avoid burnout. Resources are designed to help caregivers in need of information, advice and emotional support while they are providing long-term care. This activity will discuss the role of the caregiver, identify barriers to caregiving, establish strategies to support the caregiver and determine available support resources to assist in maintaining the caregiver’s well-being.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, nurses, nursing home administrators, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other health care professionals who support caregivers.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the varied roles of an unpaid caregiver (self-identified or not).
- Identify the challenges of the caregiver experience.
- Establish strategies to support the caregiver.
- Discuss resources and care plan for caregiver self-care.
- Recognize the importance of maintaining a caregiver’s well-being, in addition to understanding the motivation and intrinsic value of the caregiving role.

About the presenter
Dr. Kathryn Sexson is the director for the family nurse practitioner program and the associate director of education for the Family Caregiving Institute at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Her teaching expertise focuses on advanced family nurse practitioner practice, pathophysiology, pharmacology, acute care, geriatrics and family caregiving.
An ardent supporter for translating research into practice, Dr. Sexson is in the process of disseminating her most recent discovery involving family caregivers and the impact of visitation practices following admission to assisted living. She continues to collaborate with the National Resource Center for Alaska Native Elders on family caregiving in rural Alaska.
Dr. Sexson has presented at several national conferences, including the Western Institute for Nursing, the Gerontological Society of America, the Alaska Nurse Practitioner Association, the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses Association. Her work has been published in the American Journal for Nursing, Research in Gerontological Nursing and the Gerontologist.
