Substance Use in Youth
Activity description
The increasing prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) in adolescents places a heavy burden on the individual, families, and the community. Roughly 50% of adolescents ages 14-18 report marijuana use, and two-thirds report alcohol use; nearly 20% of adolescents have used prescription medication such as stimulants and opioids without a prescription. Hospitalizations for prescription opioid overdoses among youth have greatly increased, and nearly 8% of adolescents report having used illicit substances such as heroin, cocaine, and MDMA. There is a great need for health care providers (HCPs) to adopt a proactive, preventive approach to evaluation and treatment for this population. This activity will guide learners through current trends and statistics regarding adolescent SUDs, including stages of brain development, diagnostic criteria, risks, stressors, and protective factors. A review of optimal screening tools and treatment interventions will enable HCPs to better assess and treat SUDs, promote mental health, act to reduce SUD among adolescents, and decrease the potential risks for SUD in adulthood. Approaches to provide holistic mental health treatment and therapies for this population in cooperation with other specialties and community and social support services will be discussed.

- Review current trends and statistics regarding substance use disorders in youth populations, including risks, stressors, and protective factors.
- Identify optimal treatment interventions and strategies to promote health and reduce substance abuse among adolescents.
- Recognize the role of cooperation with other specialties and community and social support services to provide holistic health care.

Social workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, OptumHealth Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. OptumHealth Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credits.
Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
