The National Mental Health Crisis in Adolescents: Expanding Current Capabilities to Meet Surging Needs
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "31st Annual National Clinical Conference" held in Bloomington, Minn., Oct. 17-19, 2022.
Research has confirmed that multiple pandemic effects act as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and adolescents have reported escalating rates of pandemic-related persistent hopelessness, anxiety, and heightened stress around isolation, school closures, and illness. Mid-pandemic suicide attempts have been reported at a rate of 9 percent, hospital admissions for attempts have increased by an alarming 50 percent nationwide, and 20 percent report serious suicidal contemplation. This activity explores the current state of adolescent mental health (MH) and identifies major current stressors and subpopulations at increased risk. It describes how adolescents respond to toxic stress and outlines the long-term effects that childhood trauma can have on neural pathways, physical health, emotional development, and quality of life.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers, dietitians, and other health care professionals who are interested in the current state of adolescent mental health.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the current state of adolescent MH issues, including prevalence, subpopulations at increased risk, and long-term and pandemic-related trends.
- Identify pandemic-related stressors and ACEs that have impacted adolescent MH, limited access to prompt care, and decreased the ability to seek support.
- Discuss the effects of adversity, trauma, and toxic stress on the developing body and brain, the range of behaviors that may be seen in traumatized adolescents, and approaches to developing coping and resilience skills.
- Review screening and interventional approaches and collaborative care practices that can effectively mitigate suicidality, assess and manage adolescent MH disorders, and address inequities in access to MH care.

About the presenter
Nerissa Bauer, MD, MPH, is a behavioral pediatrician and entrepreneur in Carmel, Indiana. She left academia in December 2018 after burnout. She has a part-time behavioral health practice. She created TEACH ME ADHD, an online course for families, is co-host of ADHD Real Talk podcast and podcaster of TEACH to Go podcast for her VIP members. She is CEO of Let’s Talk Kids Health, LLC. She is also a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics and currently serves as an Executive Committee member on the Council of Healthy Mental and Emotional Development. She had a late diagnosis of ADHD in her 40s. She believes children should have opportunities to learn how to live with ADHD in a child-friendly way so they have life skills to advocate for themselves and embrace their ADHD superpower. She is on a mission to help kids and parents thrive with ADHD, while rediscovering fun.
