Eating Disorders: Anorexia Nervosa 101 for Care Advocates

October 20, 2021

Activity description

Anorexia nervosa greatly impacts affected individuals’ quality of life and can severely disrupt eating behaviors and mental health, thoughts, and emotions. While eating disorders affect approximately 28.8 million individuals over their lifetime, only 33.8 percent of those with anorexia nervosa seek treatment. Because anorexia is linked with increased rates of suicide and death, increased awareness and appropriate screening, as well as timely high-quality treatment, are essential. This activity will provide education about the current statistics, incidence, and indicators of anorexia and examine the populations at increased risk for this illness. It will elaborate on the mental health effects of this disease and the relationship between diagnosis, treatment, and positive health outcomes. Interventional strategies, both preventive and treatment-based, will be discussed and will include a focus on the responsibilities and stressors that affect caregivers. Best practices that include improved communication among health care professionals, support for caregivers, and the integration of social/community support services will also be examined.
