Mind Over Body: The Impact of Ageism on Health and Happiness
Studies have found a strong negative association between ageism—stereotyping or discrimination against those who are older—and the state of health and wellbeing of older patients. This negative impact is also found regarding ableism, in which individuals are defined as inferior based on their disabilities. Assumptions based on age and ability can lead to the under- or over-diagnosis and treatment of many conditions, and those who engage in self-ageism or self-ableism can be less likely to seek health care. This activity will provide an overview of the negative impacts of ageism and ableism on health, longevity, happiness, and the personal and professional aspects of individuals’ lives. It will also discuss the intersectionality of aging and ability status, and the varying effects these types of discrimination may have on individuals.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, PAs, psychologists, social workers, therapists, dietitians and other health care professionals (HCPs) who have an interest in learning about ageism.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Define ageism and ableism and identify their personal and professional impact on individuals.
- Describe the negative impacts of ageism on health, longevity and happiness.
- Discuss how the intersectional experience of aging can affect individuals differently.

About the presenter
Tracey Gendron, PhD, is an associate professor and chair of the department of gerontology and the executive director of the Virginia Center on Aging at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Gendron has master of science degrees in gerontology and psychology and a doctorate in developmental psychology. She is also the author of the book Ageism Unmasked: Exploring Age Bias and How to End It. Her research is focused on the language, expression, and perpetuation of ageism and aging anxiety, as well as on elderhood as a stage of development. Her personal and professional goal is to understand, raise awareness of, and disrupt the deeply embedded, normalized, and invisible ageism that is within us all.
