Managing Urinary Incontinence

Activity description

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common, yet significant, health problem that can seriously impact an individual’s quality of life. Many individuals suffer in silence and are reluctant to initiate conversations about this sensitive topic with their health care professional (HCP). UI is widely undertreated due in part to the assumption that HCPs will initiate these discussions. Unfortunately, this often does not occur.

The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) considers conversations about UI very important. Managing UI is a crucial part of assessing the health care quality of Medicare Advantage (MA) members. To assess provider accountability on this topic, the Health Outcomes Survey (HOS) measures an individual’s recall of conversations about UI and treatment options. The “Managing Urinary Incontinence” HOS measure contributes to the overall MA Stars quality score, which impacts bonuses and reimbursement.

This activity will highlight the prevalence of UI; provide effective communication and shared decision-making techniques; and discuss how to assess, treat and provide follow-up care for UI including available resources to support care and management.
