Expanding the Donor Pool: The Impact and Advantages of Normothermic Regional Perfusion in Donation after Circulatory Death

This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "Essentials of Oncology and Transplant Management for the Health Care Team" conference held in Scottsdale, Ariz., April 11-12, 2024.

In the evolving landscape of transplant medicine, donation after circulatory death (DCD) remains a significant potential source to increase the donor pool. This session delves into the application of normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) — a cutting-edge technique that aims to restore oxygenated blood flow post cardiac arrest and reverse warm ischemia — and its potential to increase the availability of and viability of donor organs. The benefits and challenges of NRP and its impact on the preservation and functionality of thoracic and abdominal organs will be discussed. Furthermore, participants will learn how NRP works alongside extracorporeal organ support in broader medical scenarios.
