Cord Blood Stem Cell Usage: Current and Future Applications in this Field (Women’s & Infants’ Health Symposium: Medical Management Today for Healthy Living Tomorrow)

This educational activity consists of recorded presentations from Women’s & Infants’ Health Symposium: Medical Management Today for Healthy Living Tomorrow held in Chicago, Illinois on May 12-13, 2011.
Cord Blood Banking offers the opportunity to cryogenically preserve a newborn’s umbilical cord blood stem cells, enabling parents to preserve these precious stem cells that are unique to the newborn, and genetically related to their families. Dozens of cancers and blood disorders are already being treated with cord blood stem cells and there are many developing applications of stem cell technologies, such as its use in treating heart disease, diabetes and cerebral palsy. This presentation will include developments in the use of cord blood as a source for transplantation and will include a current review of the outcomes and the future direction of this initiative.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  1. Discuss advances in the development of using cord blood as an alternative source for cells in transplantation, and review associated outcomes
  2. Discuss the diseases currently treated with cord blood—such as cancers and blood disorders, and new developments in this field including its application toward treating heart disease, diabetes and cerebral palsy
