Updates in Liver and Kidney Allocation Algorithms
Despite a steady increase in the number of kidney and liver transplants performed each year in the United States, there remains a significant shortage of kidneys and livers available for transplant. This has necessitated the development of allocation schema whereby priority for donor organs is given to the most severely ill patients. This session will discuss changes in the allocation policy that have been made specifically to improve equitable access to livers and kidneys for transplant.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to
- State the changes in the allocation policy for both liver and kidney transplantation
- Explain how these new allocation policies will impact severely ill patients
