The Current Status of the Opioid Crisis and Its Impact on Transplantation
This activity consists of recorded presentations from the "27th Annual National Conference" held Oct. 15–17, 2018, in Minneapolis, Minn.
Opioid addiction is a serious national crisis that affects public health as well as social and economic welfare. Organ donations have increased in the wake of America’s opioid epidemic due to deaths related to opioid overdose. This presentation will review the current state of the national opioid epidemic, the populations at risk for opioid abuse, and its effect on organ donation and transplantation.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians and other health care professionals who are interested in the opioid crisis and its impact on transplantation.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- State the current status of the opioid crisis as well as frustrations and barriers to managing this tragedy.
- Identify the populations and communities that are impacted by this crisis.
- Examine the ethical and legal ramifications of current practices of organ procurement on potential donors who have died from drug overdose and their families.
- Discuss ethical issues surrounding the donation of organs from high-risk donors.
