Skilled Nursing Facilities Series: Urinary Tract Infections
Activity description
This on-demand webcast will explore the scope and impact of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in long-term care (LTC) settings, including prevalence, costs and clinical challenges. Participants will learn to differentiate UTIs from asymptomatic bacteriuria, apply evidence-based diagnostic criteria and implement strategies for prevention and treatment. Hydration practices, catheter maintenance and risk reduction to improve resident outcomes and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use will also be discussed.
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, nurses, PAs, case managers, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care providers (HCPs) who have an interest in the impact of UTIs in LTC settings.
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the prevalence and pathophysiology of UTIs in LTC settings, including risk factors such as indwelling catheter use and comorbidities.
- Differentiate between symptomatic UTI and asymptomatic bacteriuria using Loeb and McGeer diagnostic criteria and describe why unnecessary antibiotic treatment should be avoided.
- Discuss evidence-based strategies for prevention and treatment of UTIs, including hydration protocols, prophylaxis considerations and proper care of indwelling urinary catheters.
- Interpret laboratory results (e.g., polymerase chain reaction, urinalysis, culture and sensitivity) and clinical signs to make informed decisions about UTI diagnosis and management.
- Assess the impact of UTIs on health care costs and resident outcomes and identify interventions to reduce incidence and progression to urosepsis.
