COPD: Optimal Management and Readmission Avoidance

COPD is a complex, multifactorial and progressive disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the US. The rising economic burden of COPD correlates with increases in disease severity, and hospital admissions and readmissions account for a substantial portion of the cost across all stages of COPD. The primary goal of COPD management is stabilization of chronic disease and prevention of acute exacerbations. This activity will discuss optimal management of COPD exacerbations, including factors to employ to reduce readmissions.

Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explore clinical features, risk factors, screening, prevention, evaluation and treatment of COPD.
  • Recognize the severity of exacerbations and strategies to prevent readmission of individuals with COPD.
  • State the impact of physical and behavioral health on COPD.
  • Discuss pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for managing COPD.
  • Discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when managing individuals with COPD.
