Activity description
A personality disorder is a mental health condition that involves long-lasting, all-encompassing, disruptive patterns of thinking, behavior, mood and relating to others. These patterns cause a person significant distress and/or impair their ability to function and commonly occur with other mental health disorders, substance abuse, and other chronic medical conditions. Accurately coding and documenting mental and behavioral disorders can help capture health status and promote continuity of care and better quality of life. To code for these disorders, it is important to capture details relevant to a patient's condition.
This activity will review personality disorders and discuss best practices when coding and documenting personality disorder to include specifying the type of personality disorder, recording current treatment, identifying any comorbid conditions, and when appropriate, ensuring the documentation of any previous diagnosis established by the behavioral health provider.
