Pharmacy Benefit Management Technician Certification Program: Module 1

The purpose of this three-part series is to promote learning about PBM. This series was designed for those interested in learning more about managed care pharmacy and PBM. Module 1 introduces PBM and general pharmacy knowledge; module 2 covers the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), formularies, plan types and claim adjudication; and module 3 discusses prior authorizations, drug utilization reviews and various service levels.

Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the basics of pharmacy benefit management, including costs.
  • Explain prescription drug plan benefits.
  • Define types of prescription drugs and explain how they are categorized.
  • Discuss the use of National Provider Identifiers (NPIs), including when they are required and the identification process.
  • Discuss required prescription elements and determine how to calculate prescription dosage.
