Tips and Techniques for Accommodating Hearing Loss
Hearing deficits are highly prevalent among older adults and are associated with declines in cognitive, physical and mental health. For people living with hearing loss, conversations can be a challenge. Effective communication techniques can positively impact both individuals who are hard of hearing as well as their significant others and/or caregivers. This activity will discuss challenges surrounding hearing health care for individuals with hearing loss, including older adults, and highlight effective techniques, tools and resources for these individuals.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals (HCPs) who are interested in hearing health.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify and utilize techniques to facilitate in-person and telephonic communication with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, including older adults.
- Educate deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their significant others and/or caregivers about how to communicate effectively with health care professionals and staff.
- Provide tools and resources for individuals, including older adults, who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Explore new technology for hearing loss, including voice-to-text technologies and non–sound-based alerts.

About the presenter
Michael McKee, MD, MPH, is a family physician with clinical and research expertise in disability health. As a physician with a hearing loss, he is especially interested in advocating for the rights of patients who are deaf and hard of hearing to obtain equitable health care including accessible communication. His research focus includes health disparities for individuals with various disabilities, health information accessibility, health literacy and telemedicine applications. He is also interested in the application of eye trackers and mixed methodologies to study how individuals acquire health information through visual and incidental learning opportunities. Dr. McKee is Lead Director of the MDisability program, Co-Director for the Center for Disability Health and Wellness (CDHW) and directs the Deaf Health Clinic at the Dexter Health Center at Michigan Medicine. He serves on the board of the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses (AMPHL). He is an appointed member of the Roundtable on Health Literacy of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and he is also a member of the Academy Health Disabilities Research Interest Group (IG) Advisory Committee and the Disability Section of the American Public Health Association.
