
Prolonged Grief Disorder
Activity description
This on-demand webcast will explore the historical development of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), and the components of the new PGD in the DSM-V-TR. The practical implications for clinical and supportive practice, including the use of assessment tools that aid in identifying and managing grief-related challenges will also be discussed with an emphasis on interprofessional collaboration, offering strategies to enhance team-based care and improve outcomes for clients navigating grief and loss.
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other BHCPs who care for individuals within the Medicaid population.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Explore the historical context of prolonged grief disorder.
- Define prolonged grief disorder (PGD).
- Identify the key diagnostic criteria for PGD.
- Name at least one implication for practice.
- Identify other assessment tools to assist with grief and loss.
- Discuss strategies to collaborate effectively with interprofessional teams to promote overall mental wellness, including engaging in regular team meetings, sharing insights from different disciplines, and developing integrated care plans that address the holistic needs of patients.

About the presenter
Fiyyaz Karim is a resident faculty member in the Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health and Addictions Counseling programs at the University of Minnesota. Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Karim was employed in community mental health outpatient settings, many addressing the needs of marginalized communities. His clinical interests include grief and loss, social justice issues, health psychology, and trauma. Fiyyaz currently serves as a community consultant and has conducted professional training sessions and workshops on diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) areas including microaggressions, implicit biases, cultural appropriation, and identity development. Dr. Karim has done clinical work and research in grief and loss, with a focus on disenfranchised losses such as unemployment, divorce (or relationship losses), chronic illness, addictions, and more recently losses with the pandemic.

Social workersAs a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credits.
Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals. Check with your board to be sure.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
