Enhancing Clinical Practice Through EPIC Optimization

This one-day educational activity is designed to enhance clinicians’ ability to effectively leverage the EPIC electronic health record (EHR) to support high-quality patient care, efficient clinical workflows, and coordinated team-based practice within the pediatric setting. Participants will explore strategies for improving documentation quality, communication among health care team members, and management of clinical information to support timely decision-making and continuity of care.
Through interactive instruction, guided application, and practice-based learning, participants will examine approaches for optimizing documentation workflows, managing results and patient communications, and utilizing EHR functionality to improve efficiency and reduce administrative burden. The activity will emphasize the role of effective EHR use in supporting accurate clinical records, streamlined care coordination, and responsive patient management.
To promote sustained practice improvement, participants will receive individualized feedback on their current EPIC workflows and use of system functionality. Certified EPIC Principal Trainers will provide personalized recommendations to help learners identify opportunities for improvement, implement workflow enhancements, and apply best practices that support greater efficiency, effective communication, and improved patient care outcomes.
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurse practitioners and PAs who are interested in learning about the EPIC electronic health record system.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe how effective use of EPIC can enhance interprofessional collaboration, strengthen documentation practices, and improve care coordination across the health care team.
- Apply EPIC workflow optimization tools, including chart search, note templates, speed buttons, and preference lists, to improve documentation efficiency.
- Evaluate patient records, results, messages, and encounter workflows within EPIC to support timely clinical decision-making, accurate documentation, and continuity of care.
- Implement EPIC best practices for In-Basket management, prescription authorizations, refill requests, and patient communications to improve workflow efficiency and patient care.
