Sleep on the Frontline: Protecting Rest for Moderators on Rotating Shifts

Activity description

This activity addresses sleep disruption in Trust & Safety work, focusing on how rotating shifts, exposure, and hyperarousal affect rest and next‑day functioning. Participants will learn to assess sleep problems, adapt CBT‑i strategies for unstable schedules, and build practical sleep plans that clients can realistically use.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals involved in the assessment and treatment of individuals working in Trust & Safety, content moderation, or other high‑exposure digital environments.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain basic sleep architecture and how rotating shifts disturb sleep and circadian rhythms.
  • Screen and track sleep problems using brief assessment tools including ISI, Epworth and a rotating sleep diary.
  • Apply CBT-i principles adapted for unstable schedules: stimulus control, time-in-bed caps and brief cognitive reframes.
  • Build portable, realistic sleep plans using strategies including anchor block, light timing, caffeine cut-off, wind-down, power-nap rules, and a days-off reset.
