This one day EPIC Optimization Training activity will be focused on adult medicine and is designed to enhance clinicians’ proficiency and efficiency in using the EPIC electronic health record system through targeted training. Participants will focus on improving interprofessional communication by adopting more consistent and thorough documentation practices. The session will guide learners in streamlining their charting processes using tools such as chart search, note templates, speed buttons, and personalized preference lists. Learners will also discover how to identify and utilize shortcut features and relevant patient information within message cards and tabs. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating result statuses, recognizing when patients have viewed results, and taking timely, appropriate actions. Additionally, learners will gain skills in identifying and closing open office visits, processing prescription authorizations and patient call messages, and efficiently managing telephone and refill encounters. Learning how to apply specific preferences to their In-Basket folders to optimize message handling and workflow efficiency will also be highlighted. EPIC trainers will also be reviewing each participant’s EPIC set up and use before the session to help each participant make changes and optimizations to their individual workflows.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurse practitioners and PAs who are interested in learning about the EPIC electronic health record system to increase charting efficiency and improve successful patient outcomes and safety. 

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss how to utilize interprofessional communication through more consistent and thorough EPIC use.
  • Demonstrate increased efficiency in charting encounters by effectively utilizing chart search, note templates, speed buttons and personal preference list.
  • Recognize shortcut features and relevant patient information from within message cards/tabs.
  • Interpret result statuses accurately and identify when patients have viewed their results and execute a timely clinical responses.
  • Identify open office visits and complete necessary documentation to close them promptly.
  • Apply EPIC tools to accurately process RX authorization, patient communication messages and refill requests using best practices for message management in EPIC.
  • Describe how to use specific preferences to In-Basket folders to enhance the organization and prioritization of clinical messages.
