Support for Neurodiverse Grievers

Activity description

The neurodiversity model recognizes that neurological differences are not deficits, but natural variations in how brains function. Despite growing awareness, misconceptions persist, one common myth is that neurodivergent individuals lack emotional depth but many experience emotions with heightened sensitivity and intensity. However, due to societal expectations, they may learn to "mask" their true feelings to appear neurotypical, which can lead to challenges in identifying, expressing, and labeling emotions. This on-demand webcast will discuss the role of healthcare providers by creating safe, nonjudgmental spaces where masking is unnecessary and supporting authentic emotional expression and fostering deeper therapeutic connections.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other BHCPs who care for individuals within the Medicaid population.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the neurodiversity paradigm.
  • Name three common misconceptions about neurodiversity.
  • Identify strategies to cultivate a safe space for neurodiverse clients.
  • Discuss strategies to collaborate effectively with interprofessional teams to promote overall mental wellness, including engaging in regular team meetings, sharing insights from different disciplines, and developing integrated care plans that address the holistic needs of patients.
