Practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM) is important in today’s health care environment because this model of care offers clinicians a way to enrich quality, provide patient satisfaction, reduce costs and improve outcomes. A common implementation of EBM involves the use of clinical practice algorithms during medical decision-making to encourage optimal care. This widely recognized practice is designed to address the persistent problem of clinical practice variation with the help of actionable information at the point of care. These e-newsletters will enable health care professionals (HCPs) to put new EBM into practice.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners and other HCPs who have an interest in EBM.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Increase knowledge about shoulder pain related to rotator cuff disorders (primarily rotator cuff tendinopathy and non-traumatic rotator cuff defects) and explore the current management paradigm, which primarily focuses on non-operative treatment with judicious use of surgical intervention for specific cases.
  • Examine evidence-based reports on the effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in preventing adverse kidney and/or cardiovascular outcomes for individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) and for those with obesity but without DM and evaluate a cost-effectiveness analysis that looks at the sum of the total benefits of all avoided events.
  • Determine if the addition of Helicobacter pylori stool antigen screening to an established colorectal cancer screening program impacts mortality from gastric cancer.
  • Describe the current standard of care for individuals with concomitant severe aortic stenosis and obstructive coronary artery disease using a surgical approach with combined aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting (SAVR + CABG) versus a percutaneous approach using transcatheter aortic valve replacement combined with percutaneous coronary intervention (TAVR + PCI) and describe the potential risks and benefits.
  • Discuss screening recommendations for prostate cancer using blood-based prostate-specific antigen screening.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.0 Medical Knowledge Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) MOC program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
