Application of Motivational Interviewing to Case Management

Activity description

Education on healthy behaviors and condition management is critical to preventing and slowing the progression of chronic conditions. Traditional education methods often fail when members are told what they need to do by health care workers and educators. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a powerful technique that case managers can leverage to identify the member’s priorities, values and barriers to change. Then, that knowledge is applied to motivate the member to develop a plan that will help them achieve their individual goals. This activity will provide insight on why MI is beneficial, and it will describe MI techniques that may be used in various health care settings.
