Activity description
Neuropathy refers to any condition that affects the normal activity of the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathy is very common. It is estimated that about 25% to 30% of Americans will be affected by neuropathy. There are many different types of neuropathy and it can present with differing symptoms, including numbness, pain, weakness or loss of balance, depending on the type of nerve involved. Since neuropathy has many causes and presentations, the first step to diagnosis is performing a thorough medical history and physical examination. This activity will discuss the different types of neuropathy, causes, risk factors and how to accurately identify and diagnose neuropathy.

About the presenter
Christopher M. Wilson, MD, attended medical school and completed his neurology residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was chief neurology resident. He practiced at Indiana University Medical Center for several months and then took a position with American Health Network (AHN) in central Indiana. Over the past 14 years, he has helped establish AHN’s sleep labs, become medical director for AHN’s neurology program, been a principal investigator in numerous research trials, taught medical students, served on a medical mission trip in Honduras and served on various local and regional professional committees.
