Heart Failure: Part II

Heart failure and atrial fibrillation are two conditions that are increasingly prevalent and closely aligned with associated high morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. Given the poor outcomes associated with heart failure and atrial fibrillation, finding effective therapies for these individuals is of utmost importance. To provide optimal management, it is essential to understand the mechanisms and inter-relationship of these conditions and how best to combine therapies with evidence-based best practices supporting their use.

This activity will highlight the relationship between heart failure and atrial fibrillation, discuss common treatments for arrhythmia and highlight the importance of documenting patients' current medical condition and their health history.

Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify methods to diagnosis an arrhythmia.
  • List common treatments for arrhythmia including pacemakers and medication therapies.
  • Explain how arrhythmia interacts with heart disease, such as in atrial fibrillation and heart failure.
  • Identify whether angina should be documented as active or as being part of the patient’s history.
