Aging With an Intellectual and Developmental Disability: Challenges and Management
HCPs are encountering an aging I/DD population as people with I/DD are living longer, healthier lives. Some of these individuals have environmental and psychosocial needs that may not be met by traditional geriatric care. HCPs are sometimes unfamiliar with how to assess and treat cognitive decline and dementia experienced by the aging population with I/DD.
This webcast is designed to increase awareness and knowledge of age-associated changes in aging adults with I/DD and to support individuals with I/DD and their families who are affected by aging and dementia. The webcast will also discuss systems of care and aging-related community support resources that may be used to address health problems such as dementia and cognitive decline that can impact older adults with I/DD.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to
- Discuss the impact of aging on adults with I/DD and their families
- Review the effectiveness of environmental, psychosocial and pharmaceutical interventions for managing cognitive decline in patients with I/DD
- Identify systems of care that may be used to address health problems such as dementia and cognitive decline that impact older adults with I/DD
- Describe ways to modify the clinical approach to adjust for loss of function in the older adult with I/DD
