Diabetic Kidney Disease

This session will focus on albuminuria and its critical role in escalating the risk of progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), particularly within the context of diabetic nephropathy. It will review the mechanisms through which albuminuria contributes to kidney damage and explore evidence-based treatments for albuminuric chronic kidney disease (CKD). It will also analyze the reasons behind the often-observed acute drop in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) following the initiation of these treatments.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in learning how to better integrate palliative care services into the primary care setting.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of albuminuria and how it increases the risk of progression to ESKD.
- Identify three evidence-based treatments for albuminuric CKD.
- Discuss the clinical significance of the commonly occurring acute decrease in eGFR following the initiation of evidence-based treatments for CKD and why this phenomenon is generally considered acceptable in CKD management.
