Health care professionals (HCPs) must understand how it can impact the treatment plan for individuals with chronic illness, serious illness and/or rare diseases. This activity will discuss the importance of data and evidence regarding the use of genetics/genomics in treatment planning.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other HCPs who have an interest in genetic testing and genetics-informed treatment planning.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Explore the importance of data and evidence regarding current and novel gene therapies/genetics-informed treatment.
- Identify resources to investigate current evidence for treatment of diseases.
- Explain how genetics/genomics may influence treatment plans for individuals with cancer, sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other rare, chronic or serious diseases.

About the presenter
Stephen F. Kingsmore is president and CEO of Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego, which is implementing pediatric genomic/precision medicine on an unprecedented scale. Dr. Kingsmore received MB, ChB, BAO and DSc degrees from the Queen’s University of Belfast. He trained in clinical immunology in Northern Ireland and did a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He was a Medscape Physician of the year in 2012, and received the 2013 Scripps Genomic Medicine award and 2013 ILCHUN prize of the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. TIME magazine ranked his rapid genome diagnosis among the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2012. In 2015 and 2018, Dr. Kingsmore surpassed his previous record in genetic sequencing by reducing the process to 26 and 19 hours, respectively, which were recognized by Guinness World Records as the fastest genetic sequencing in the world.
