Exploring Opioid Crisis Dynamics: New Perspectives and Strategies
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
The opioid crisis continues to be a critical area of concern in the U.S. In 2022, there were 81,692 opioid-involved drug overdose deaths in a single 12-month period. This activity will focus on enhancing our understanding of the current opioid crisis and will explore new angles and address current concerns, including the use of over-the-counter intranasal naloxone, the evolving landscape of opioids with a focus on fentanyl, the intersection between suicide and opioid overdoses, the significance of the new 988 helpline in the crisis, and the viability of home-based detox startups. Strategies to effectively address the ongoing challenges of the opioid crisis will be discussed.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dentists/allied dental staff, dietitians, dietetic technicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Analyze the impact of fentanyl in the opioid crisis and its implications on treatment approaches, including risk assessment, harm-reduction strategies, and enhanced awareness of the changing opioid landscape.
- Assess the effectiveness and safety of over-the-counter intranasal naloxone, its potential role in reducing opioid-related deaths, and when to recommend it to patients.
- Explore the complex relationship between suicide and opioid overdoses, including overlapping risk factors, early warning signs, and evidence-based interventions to address both issues concurrently.
- Evaluate the significance of the 988 helpline in the opioid crisis as a critical resource for those in need of immediate assistance, and identify appropriate protocols for referral and collaboration.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive up to 0.75 enduring continuing education credits.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits.
