Obesity has been declared a disease by the American Medical Association and is, in itself, a major medical risk that predisposes to other chronic conditions. Obesity paired with type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke and other comorbidities associated with diabetes. Weight loss surgery is increasingly being used as a tool to manage type 2 diabetes. This session will discuss the question “can diabetes be surgically cured?” Long-term metabolic effects of bariatric surgery in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus will be presented.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

2. Discuss the long-term metabolic effects of bariatric surgery in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
