Migraine Management: Advances in Treatment and Patient Care
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "34th Annual National Conference" held in Minneapolis, Minn., May 13-15, 2025.
This activity will cover the latest research on migraines, including neuroelectric networks, the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and other neuropeptides, and the underlying mechanisms of migraines. Advances in migraine treatment will be highlighted, focusing on CGRP antagonists and neuromodulation devices, along with their efficacy and safety profiles. Preventive strategies will also be discussed, including CGRP monoclonal antibodies, lifestyle modifications and nonpharmacological interventions. Additionally, it will address the psychosocial impacts of migraines on daily activities, as well as work and family life, and will propose strategies for improving quality of life through comprehensive care, patient education and shared decision-making.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the underlying mechanisms of migraines and the role of CGRP and other neuropeptides.
- Review the latest advances in migraine treatment, including CGRP antagonists and neuromodulation devices, and their efficacy and safety profiles.
- Discuss preventive strategies for migraines, the psychosocial impacts on quality of life and strategies for developing comprehensive management plans with patients.

Sarah M. Benish, MD, FAAN, is a professor of neurology and vice chair of clinical affairs at the University of Minnesota. She serves as physician/co-chief for the neuroscience service line at M Health Fairview. As a general neurologist, her clinical practice has grown over the past 17 years to be over two-thirds headache patients. She enjoys helping her patients get better control of headaches and gaining back their quality of life.

Optum Health Education is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education for psychologists. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this program. 0.75 CE hours.
Social workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive up to 0.75 enduring continuing education credits.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits.
