Current Concepts in the Management of Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain

Activity description

Despite the availability of evidence-based management strategies, low back pain remains one of the most common causes of disability and health care utilization worldwide. This educational webcast will review the natural history of acute and chronic low back pain, explore value-based multidisciplinary care pathways, and examine current evidence-based diagnostic and treatment approaches. Participants will gain practical strategies for selecting appropriate interventions and incorporating guideline-concordant care into clinical practice to optimize patient outcomes and resource utilization.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other HCPs who have an interest in learning about chronic low back pain.

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Describe the natural history and clinical progression of acute and chronic low back pain.
  • Evaluate diagnostic approaches and value-based multidisciplinary care pathways for individuals with low back pain.
  • Apply evidence-based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment strategies to support individualized management of acute and chronic low back pain.

About the presenter
Louis G. Jenis, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon who graduated from Boston University and completed his internship and residency at UMass Medical School in Worcester. Dr. Jenis completed a reconstructive spine surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. 

Dr. Jenis has previously practiced at the Mass General/Brigham system, including as Chief Medical Officer at Newton Wellesley Hospital. In 2018, he joined the Reliant Medical Group where he served as Chief of Specialties.  

In April 2024, Dr. Jenis was appointed the role of Associate Chair of Specialties for Optum Massachusetts.

His current focus is on spine patient care with emphasis on creating evidence-based clinical pathways, decreasing low value care, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches to clinical management including using patient reported outcomes to support decision-making.
