Chronic Kidney Disease and Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

Activity description

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent and associated with significant implications for multiple body processes and organ systems. The association of CKD with hypertension and diabetes is of particular importance.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is most common in the setting of CKD, particularly CKD stage 3 and above. Screening includes regular measurement of PTH, calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus with frequency based on CKD stage. Documentation and coding need to be as specific as possible to support the specific type of hyperparathyroidism (e.g., primary or secondary, renal or non-renal) whenever possible.
