Activity description
The overall burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains high in US, with the rates of kidney failure requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation ranking among the highest in the world. CKD costs Medicare $84 billion annually, and end-stage kidney disease alone costs Medicare $36 billion annually. More than 1 in 7 US adults, or approximately 37 million people, are estimated to have CKD, and as many as 90% of those people do not know they have it. CKD is more common in those aged 65 years or older, in women and in the Hispanic population. It is the ninth leading cause of death in the US.
