The Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management of Dementia

December 9, 2014

Many older adults are diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, and one in three dies with Alzheimer’s disease, which is the sixth leading cause of death in the US. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Estimates are that more than half of the older adult population demonstrates behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) such as agitation, verbal and physical aggression, sleep disturbance, and wandering.
Often, behavioral health issues are hard to identify and treat due to the complexity of other medical conditions. Healthcare providers (HCPs) play a critical role in the identification and treatment of behavioral health issues in older adults and need to be equipped with a better understanding of how to treat this psychiatric population. This activity will review the challenges confronting HCPs when caring for older people and will explore how to identify, manage, and treat dementia in this population.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  1. Recognize the symptoms of dementia in older people and the value of early identification and diagnosis of this disease
  2. Evaluate and gain an understanding of medication management in the treatment of dementia
  3. State nonpharmacologic interventions and recommended courses of action that HCPs and caregivers can use to improve outcomes in patients with dementia
